As a Kingdom company, we are committed to fostering a culture where employees are encouraged to reflect on and share how God is working in their lives. In our context, that can often looks like sharing a "devo."

If you're reading this, you've likely been asked to share a devotional thought at an upcoming meeting or gathering. We're thankful you're considering it, and we're glad you're here!

We hope this page will offer helpful insights and resources as you reflect on what it might look like to share a devotional thought in your context. Let's jump in!

You might be thinking, "I'm not sure I can prepare something good enough to share with others."

Let's start by saying that "good" is a relative term. We want to encourage you: good does not mean elegant words or polished speech. God used key figures in the Bible to do great things for His Kingdom despite their self-proclaimed lack of eloquence—like Moses (Exodus 4:10) and the Apostle Paul (1 Corinthians 2:1–5).

We define "good" as an honest & authentic Kingdom reflection. This could mean sharing something from the heart that God is teaching you in your current season, preparing thoughts on a verse or passage you love, or reflecting on a sermon or devotional you’ve heard. There’s no “one-size-fits-all” method for crafting a devotional thought. Don’t let fear of “not being good enough” keep you from saying yes to the opportunity to share.

We hope this resource can provide some helpful tools as you consider your upcoming devo opportunity.

Next, you might be thinking, "OK, I think I want to do this… but where do I begin?" Let's get practical & walk through some steps to consider as you dive into crafting a Kingdom Thought.

Pray

The most important part of preparing your devotional thought doesn’t happen while thinking, reflecting, studying, writing, or delivering—it happens on your knees. Prayer is the true source of power behind any message you hope to convey. Begin by asking God for wisdom & clarity about what to share and how to help you arrive at that point. Whether you already have a topic in mind or are starting from scratch, start by talking with the One you’ll be talking about. Create space to listen for what He might lay on your heart, and ask Him to help you be receptive to it.

Decide on a Topic or Theme

After spending time in prayer, it’s time to decide what you’ll talk about. Maybe God has already placed a specific topic or passage on your heart. Or maybe you’re still wondering, What in the world am I going to talk about?” That’s okay! God speaks in many ways and at many times. Your topic may become clearer as you take the next steps.

Where Can I Find Inspiration?

There are many places you can go to find inspiration. The following is certainly not an exhaustive list, but hopefully a helpful start:

Reflection Questions
  • What has God been teaching me lately?
  • What may be relevant to my audience right now?
  • When have I experienced God's presence or faithfulness in my life?
  • How has God shown up in my story or in the lives of those around me?
The Bible
  • Reflect on a favorite verse or passage.
  • Revisit a familiar story to discover new insights.
  • Explore a less familiar passage to see what God might reveal.
  • Reflect on a sermon or teaching you heard at church.

Devotionals

Use devotional resources that engage with Scripture and biblical themes. Consider expanding on thoughts that have challenged, taught, or grown your faith. Examples include:

Books

Maybe you're reading a book that has offered insight into your personal, spiritual, or professional journey. Consider how you might be able to apply what you're learning in that book to your faith journey with Jesus.

Once you’ve processed your ideas, consider how you might structure them. Below are a few examples of what that could look like. This is certainly not a requirement, but could be a helpful tool if you're unsure how you want to craft your message.

Focus on a theme like grace, hope, service, etc.:

  • Theme Introduction: Briefly introduce the theme.

A Word of Caution on the Use of Artificial Intelligence

It's no secret that we live in an AI saturated world. While Artificial Intelligence can be an incredibly efficient and effective tool in many areas related to work and every day life, we would do well to use it sparingly when preparing a devotional thought. The point of a devo is not to get up and share a neatly curated & polished message that was crafted by a computer. The point is to reflect inwardly on something God is speaking to your heart.

Writing a devo should challenge you. It should cause you to think outside the realm of familiarity and engage with thoughts & ideas that will help you continue to grow in your faith. Don't allow yourself to be tempted toward convenience or the path of least resistance. Let this experience push you out of your comfort zone.

This next sentence comes with a lot of love behind it: Don't rob the Holy Spirit of an opportunity to form you by relying on a computer to create what God wants to do through you.

God wants to teach you through this process—but you have to allow him the time and space to do so.

Lastly, consider how you’ll practically share your devo.

Do you prefer an outline, a manuscript, or memorization? Will you use your phone, printed notes, or a notebook? There’s no right answer. The important thing is to arrive prepared and comfortable with your content.

Don’t pressure yourself to be polished or perfect. Be real, be authentic, and let your personality shine. It’s okay to feel nervous—you’re human! God can use you, nerves and all.

One final note of encouragement as you embark on the devo-writing process: Don't hesitate to ask for help! Reach out to someone on the Ministry Team, your manager, or someone who has shared a devo before. Ask for pointers, advice, or feedback in the areas you need help.

There are a lot of folks who want to support you and help you to be as prepared as possible.

We can't wait to hear what God is teaching you!
